Tips for Adjusting to New Hearing Aids

Congratulations on your new hearing aids! They'll help you hear better, communicate more effectively, and enjoy a higher quality of life. But it takes time to get used to them first. After all, hearing aids are a major adjustment and will bring a lot of change to your life. Not only do you have to get used to wearing them, but you have to get used to hearing how things really sound. As you start wearing your first device, or devices, keep the following tips in mind to help make a smoother transition.

Getting Used to Hearing Aids

Even when you know what to expect, nothing can prepare you for the first time you hear the sound of your own voice or the hum of the air conditioner through your hearing aids. Hearing aids are designed to amplify sounds, and so certain noises might sound different to you and new ones might take you off guard.

As you become acclimated to hearing, identifying, and interpreting noises, you may realize that you need adjustments. If you ever experience this, please let us know and we can help your hearing aids sound and feel better. Your hearing aids should always be comfortable. They shouldn't cause any soreness or bleeding. If that happens, take them out immediately and let us know.

Adjustment Takes Time

Getting used to hearing aids can take up to four months, sometimes more. But as long as you're following instructions, letting us know about any problems, and wearing your hearing aids as often as you can, the adjustment period will be much easier. Try not to get discouraged and don't give up. It's normal to feel frustrated, but know it will all be worth it in the end. Keep a positive attitude and be as patient as you can. Eventually, you won't even notice you have hearing aids in.

Here are some additional tips:

Keep Your Eye on the Finish Line

Remember, this period of adjustment won't last forever. In a few months, your hearing aids could feel as natural as your own ears. In the meantime, don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
